The 17th century

Until the 17th century, most composers were paid by churches to write music. In many large churches, the composers had to write new music for every week.Thids was performed in church by professional musicians, at first an organist and a choir, later to depend on churches for their money. But some still worked for churches, and others wrote church music for special occasions. In the 19th century, some composers wrote religious music that they intended to be played in concert halls, rather than in church.
